- Secondary School Student Exchange Program
The secondary school student exchange is an annual exchange between the students in
Hamilton county Ohio schools and Munich schools. The exchange is approximately two weeks long.
Students attend school with their host student and participate in many travel and cultural
activities. High school students from Cincinnati travel to Munich in June, and Munich students
come to Cincinnati earlier in the year. Cincinnati students do not have to speak German as
most German high school students are fluent in English.
Students stay with the families of their host student. With these "home stays", the
participating students have an opportunity to communicate on a very personal level.
This results in an increased understanding of the educational and cultural differences,
the sharing of information and perspective, and building partnerships between these students
and their host families.
Students say that they establish life-long friendships and benefit greatly
from these educational, travel and cultural experiences which help them with their
own school activities when they return.

- High School Teacher Exchange Program
The Hamilton County/Munich Teacher Exchange is an annual exchange between schools
in the greater Cincinnati area (served by the Hamilton County Educational Service) and
Munich. The Hamilton County Educational Service Center provides partial funding for the
Hamilton county teachers. There is no language requirement for the teacher to speak to
German, as the Munich teachers are fluent in English. Munich teachers visit Cincinnati
in April and Cincinnati teachers travel to Munich in June.
Applications for each exchange are made available to district superintendents in
the fall of each year.
Teachers should contact their district superintendent for application and
selection process information. For general information on the exchange, contact
Deborah Myers at the Hamilton County
Educational Service Center

two internationally-recognized conservatories who each provide training in music,
dance and theater. The fiwill be consultations, master classes and performances

The Electronic Media Division of the College-Conservatory of Music has begun a
student exchange program with the Institute for Communication Science at the
Ludwig Maximillians
University, which already has a cooperation agreement with the University of
Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky University. The German students are being supported
by grants from Siemens and the CCM students through grants from Procter and Gamble

also lead to exchanges between faculties for both study and teaching. There are

and the Universität München.
- This program began in the fall of 1997. U.C. is presently accepting
applications from graduate students in the German language department who
would like to travel to Munich in the fall. Both the Munich and U.C. students
will receive an all-expense paid scholarship for a full year of study. For more

U.C. department of
German language web site.
University of Cincinnati Intensive Language Program
- The University of Cincinnati offers a three-week long Intensive German
language program durring the Summer in June. The program is conducted by professors
from UC. Students pay $2100 plus the cost of their plane ticket. Also, U.C. has been
very generous with travel grants and stipends for the students as part of its goal
to further develop the University's Globalization Programs. To qualify, students
must complete two years of college-level German and be in good standing at U.C.
Students are asked to speak only German for the three weeks with their teachers
and fellow students.
Dr. Cordelia Stroinigg, a professor at UC’s Germanic Languages Dept. stated
that, “Students learn German faster when living in the country where the language is spoken.
By taking this exciting, new, intensive course, our students have the opportunity to
improve their spoken German and conversation skills exponentially - especially those
students who apply themselves and really honor their language and pledge to speak only
German. This is accomplished in a short time by complete immersion in the language,
the people and the culture.” Because of the 24-hour-a-day intensive nature of this
course, students receive 6 credit hours, the equivalent of two full classes in Cincinnati.
Dr. Stroinigg also stated that, ‘Next year we will consider accepting students from
other Universities along with U.C. students. We expect that the program will grow.”
For additional information contact Dr. Cordelia Stroinigg, Phone: 513.556.2752,
FAX: 513.556.1991.
Student Chef Exchange
- On January 4, 1998, a gourmet dinner was given to launch a new Munich-Cincinnati
student chef exchange. This exchange resulted from the Cincinnati delegation's trip
to Munich in 1996. Chef John Kinsella of Cincinnati State College, Culinary Arts Program,
was part of the delegation. He, along with four students, prepared the dinner hosted by
mayor Qualls for Munich business executives, government officials and travel industry
representatives. While in Munich, an agreement in principal was signed with the Bavaria
Hotel Fachschule (south of Munich) to initiate a student chef exchange. The hotel and
school is headed by a famous European Hotelier, Marga Ries. Students from Cincinnati
will attend school in Germany to experience their special culinary art techniques.
German students will come here to gain cost control experience. There are 800 master
chefs in Germany alone and only 54 in the entire U.S.
