Munich Sister Cities Association of Greater Cincinnati

Legal Exchanges & Internships

Attorney Exchange
Since 1995 an active annual exchange has taken place between Munich and Greater Cincinnati lawyers. Cincinnati lawyers depart in June for a week long exchange with their counterparts in Munich. Munich lawyers visit Cincinnati generally in September. The program is a joint effort of the Munich Sister City Association of Greater Cincinnati and the Cincinnati Bar Association.

During the visit in Munich, the Cincinnati lawyers observe the German justice system and meet with Munich lawyers to learn of the similarities and differences between the two systems. The program includes home stays with Munich host attorneys.

Cincinnati lawyers reciprocate in September. Home stays allow the attorneys to compare our systems while communicating on a very personal level. They also form long lasting friendships and possible partnerships.

Police Officer Exchange
The association's first police officer exchange in the fall of 1996 brought two Munich officers to Cincinnati. The purpose of the visit was to observe the operation of the Hamilton county and the city of Cincinnati police departments and to exchange law enforcement ideas that might benefit each organization.

Lt. Roger Wolf of the Cincinnati police department and sheriff Dan Carter of the Hamilton county sheriff's department were picked to visit Munich in September 1997. Lt. Wolf of district 1 is in an area where large crowds are handled on a daily basis. He studied the procedures of the Munich police in the handling of crowds during the Munich Oktoberfest. Deputy sheriff Carter is stationed in the corrections facility with the sheriff's patrol. He observed the Munich system and procedures of handling large numbers of prisoners.

Internships
The Munich Sister City Association helps arrange Internships for law students to work in law firms in Munich and Cincinnati. Each internship is tailored to meet the individual students specific needs to complete their major interests in the law.

In February 1997, the Munich Sister City Association brought Florean Bögel, a Munich law student, to intern at Wood, Herron & Evans in Cincinnati. This was the first law internship facilitated by the Munich Sister City Association. The internship resulted from the attorney exchange program when attorney Hans-Georg Augustinowski visited Cincinnati. With the help of the Munich Sister City Association, Mr. Augustinowski arranged this internship. A similar internship is being planned to send a Cincinnati law student to Munich.

In August 1997, the association also brought Dirk Weinzierl to Cincinnati to intern at Denlinger, Rosenthal & Greenberg. Herr Weinzierl completed law school and his first bar exam. He is in a two-year State of Bavaria Internship Program. His work in Cincinnati will count toward his two-year internship. Mr. Weinzierl is working in the field of labor law during his stay in Cincinnati.
